Via Francigena- Day 21

Sutri to Campagnano di Roma
13.5 Miles; 6.5 Hours on the trail
(Cumulative: 229.8 Miles; 124.9 Hours on the trail)

We left Sutri under overcast skies & cool temperatures in the Mid-40s walking along country lanes & tracks in the
beautifully, rugged Lazio countryside heading to Campagnano di Roma.

We are getting close to Rome now so the traffic is getting busier & we can see & hear airplanes flying into & out of Rome’s major airport.

The trail was highway adjacent for a short section

We walked by a Livestock Guarding Area which had three dogs roaming.
Like the warning on the sign said, we stayed away from them; but, they barked at us & came close to us which unlike their published training states, seemed aggressive.

We stopped at the Monte Gelato Cascades for a brief respite.

Very disappointed that there was no gelato there.

After the cascades, we followed a track through some woodlands to the hilltop town Campagnano di Roma.

Campagnano di Roma

Campagnano di Roma retains its atmosphere from the Middle Ages with its “medieval village” section.

Porta Romana- Built in 1714

The Collegiata di San Giovanni Battista (Church of Saint John the Baptist) is the main religious building & duomo located in the town’s historic center.

The original church was built in the 13th Century, then demolished in the early 16th Century.

The current Renaissance church was started in 1515 &  completed around 1530.

This church incorporated materials from an older paleochristian chapel dated prior to the 10th Century which was previously on the site.

Interior

The wooden ceiling was designed & made by Michelangelo’s pupil Giacomo Del Duca in 1582.

Between 2003- 2010, the church underwent major structural & aesthetic restorations to repair its roof, flooring, portals, & walls.
